After lessons in digital photography and pre-trip orientation, we\u2019ll take off for two weeks of exploration, creating travel blogs to reflect on the experience. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2019ll <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">spend our first week in southern Spain, based in the Plaza Santa Ana &#8212; at the center of Granada. With an eye toward the Islamic history and influence in the region, we\u2019ll tour the Alhambra palace, take day trips to Albayzin and Sacramonte, visit the famous mosque of Cordoba, and take a bike tour of Seville. We\u2019ll then wind our way to Morocco after touring the Rock of Gibraltar, crossing the Strait by ferry, and landing in Tangier. Part palace, part fort, part World Heritage site, part lesson in medieval architecture, the Alhambra has long enchanted a never-ending line of expectant visitors. As a historic monument, it is unlikely it will ever be surpassed.&#8221; (From <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lonelyplanet.com\/spain\/granada\/attractions\/alhambra\/a\/poi-sig\/430192\/360733\"><em>Lonely Planet<\/em><\/a>)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Albayzin and Sacromonte &#8211;<\/strong>\u00a0We&#8217;ll take a guided tour of these\u00a0areas of Granada. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lovegranada.com\/places\/albaicin\/\">Albayzin<\/a> comprises\u00a0the Arab quarter and\u00a0the medieval <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Medina_quarter\">Medina<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lovegranada.com\/places\/sacromonte\/\">Sacramonte<\/a>\u00a0offers views of indescribable beauty (including the cave houses that adorn the area). We&#8217;ll also take a walking tour of the city.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Seville<\/strong> &#8211; We&#8217;ll take a day trip to Seville, where we&#8217;ll visit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.andalucia.com\/cities\/seville\/cathedral.htm\">the Cathedral<\/a> &#8211; the largest Gothic cathedral in the world, and another UNESCO World Heritage site. Layers of fortifications include the remains of a 14th-century Moorish Castle and the 18th century Great Siege Tunnels, which were expanded in WWII&#8221; (from Google Maps). Wander through the ruins of columns and enter the ornamental grandeur that is the exquisite mausoleum to discover a part of Moroccan history that will forever remain incomplete.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Calligraphy class\u00a0&#8211; &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.metmuseum.org\/toah\/hd\/cali\/hd_cali.htm\">Calligraphy<\/a> is the most highly regarded and most fundamental element of Islamic art&#8230; [I]nherent within the Arabic script is the potential for developing a variety of ornamental forms. In harmony with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.travel-exploration.com\/tour.cfm\/special_Discover_Berber_Village\">Berber\u2018s<\/a> belief in Baraka (good luck), Henna worn on the body offers protection against illness, the evileye, and brings joy.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Fez, Meknes, and Volubilis<\/h4>\n<p>We&#8217;ll take a two day, one night trip to these locations and visit sites such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/University_of_Al_Quaraouiyine\">University of al-Qarawiyyin<\/a> &#8211; &#8220;the oldest existing, continually operating and the first degree awarding educational institution in the world according to <a title=\"UNESCO\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/UNESCO\">UNESCO<\/a> and <a title=\"Guinness World Records\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Guinness_World_Records\">Guinness World Records<\/a><sup id=\"cite_ref-5\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/University_of_Al_Quaraouiyine#cite_note-5\">[5]<\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-6\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/University_of_Al_Quaraouiyine#cite_note-6\">[6]<\/a><\/sup> and is sometimes referred to as the oldest university.<sup id=\"cite_ref-7\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/University_of_Al_Quaraouiyine#cite_note-7\">[7]<\/a><\/sup> The Al Quaraouiyine mosque-religious school \/ college was founded by <a title=\"Fatima al-Fihri\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fatima_al-Fihri\">Fatima al-Fihri<\/a> in 859 with an associated school, or <a title=\"Madrasa\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Madrasa\">madrasa<\/a>, which subsequently became one of the leading spiritual and educational centers of the historic <a title=\"Muslim world\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Muslim_world\">Muslim world<\/a>. It is separated into three parts, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.travel-exploration.com\/tour.cfm\/Fes\">F\u00e8s<\/a> el Bali (the old, walled city), F\u00e8s -Jdid (new Fes, home of the Mellah), and the Ville Nouvelle (the French-created, newest section of Fes. The Medina of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.travel-exploration.com\/tour.cfm\/Fes\">Fes<\/a> el Bali is believed to be the largest contiguous car-free urban area in the world. To enter the medina, you will pass through the Bab\u00a0Bou Jeloud Gate, with its decoration of blue and green faience.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Meknes &#8211; &#8220;Often referred to as the Versailles of Morocco, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.travel-exploration.com\/tour.cfm\/Meknes\">Mekn\u00e8s<\/a> is located between the fertile plain of Rharb and the Middle Atlas.
