State the full name of the speaker in your introduction, along with any other contex-setting information necessary for your audience to follow, and offer a concise but thorough summary of\u00a0<b>what<\/b>\u00a0the artifact (in this case, the testimony) wants the audience to believe or feel or do.<\/p>\n<p>Spend the majority of your allotted space offering your analysis of\u00a0<b>how<\/b>\u00a0the argument works rhetorically, what makes it persuasive. You are not concerned here with agreeing or disagreeing (that is beside the point) but in offering an analysis of the persuasive strategies employed in this testimony.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You should discern and describe<\/strong> <b>all of the following<\/b>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>who this rhetor is and how he establishes credibility (<i>ethos<\/i>), IOW, how does he establish that he is knowledgeable, trustworthy, and full of good will?<\/li>\n<li>any appeals to the audience&#8217;s emotions (<i>pathos<\/i>). Be specific: what emotions are evoked and how (vivid imagery? charged language? identificatory moves?). Point us to specific passages.<\/li>\n<li>any appeals to the audience\u2019s sense of reason and logic (<i>logos<\/i>), including the\u00a0<strong>formal topic(s)<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>the supporting and main stases<\/strong> operating in the artifact.\u00a0Be specific.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Plus at least one\u00a0of the following:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the intended audience and\u00a0the actual audience (could be the same)<\/li>\n<li>the exigency: what is the specific urgency prompting the rhetor to speak\/write?<\/li>\n<li>the type of discourse (juridical, deliberative, epideictic)<\/li>\n<li>the cultural or historical context in which the article was written, the larger conversation to which it contributes, as well as the timing of this contribution (<i>kairos<\/i>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Conclude<\/strong> with a brief reflection on what you&#8217;ve discovered through your analysis, a wrap up or \u201ccap\u201d of the rhetorical strategies you\u2019ve discovered and your evaluation of how well they worked.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Save your analysis on your desktop as a word document, send a copy to yourself, and submit it\u00a0to <a href=\"https:\/\/utexas.instructure.com\/courses\/\">Canvas<\/a>\u00a0under Practice Analysis Assignment.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>You have an hour to write a 2-3 page analysis of Zach Wahls\u2019 testimony to the Iowa House Judiciary Committee (here), and submit it via canvas\u00a0to the Practice Analysis Assignment.
