Of course it was always possible for film critics to do this in print, and they\u2019ve been doing it for over 100 years, following more or less the same template that one would use while writing about any art form: state your thesis or opinion, then back it with examples. director by trade, Zoller Seitz is nonetheless probably best known as a prominent American cultural critic. \u00a0He&#8217;s made over 1000 hours of video essays and\u00a0is generally recognized as a founder of the video essay movement in high-brow periodicals. \u00a0A recognized\u00a0expert on Wes Anderson, Zoller Seitz is also notable because he often mixes other cinematic media (especially\u00a0television) into his analysis, as in the above example, which doubles as an experiment in the absence of\u00a0voiceover.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" video essays on filmic form, Tony&#8217;s arguments are clean, simple, and well-evidenced. \u00a0Look to Tony as an example of aggressive and precise editing and arrangement. \u00a0He&#8217;s also an excellent sound editor&#8211;pay attention to his choices and try out some of his sound-mixing techniques in your essay.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe width=\"676\" height=\"380\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6U_GNHnRdzw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>Adam Johnston, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCSc16oMxxlcJSb9SXkjwMjA\">Your Movie Sucks (YMS)<br \/>\n<\/a><\/em><\/strong>Although an excellent example of epideictic film rhetoric, this channel is a great example of what\u00a0<em>not\u00a0<\/em>to do in this assignment (write a movie review, gush about how good\/bad you think a movie is, focus on motifs or narrative content instead of\u00a0<em>film form\u00a0<\/em>as the center of your argument). \u00a0What you\u00a0<strong>can\u00a0<\/strong>learn from Adam is a lot about style. \u00a0Adam&#8217;s delivery, pacing, and editing all work together to promote a mildly-disinterested-and-therefore-credible ethos through a near-monotone, which\u00a0I&#8217;ll affectionately dub\u00a0the &#8220;Daria&#8221; narratorial ethos.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe width=\"676\" height=\"380\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fD58Bt2gj78?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>Adam Westbrook, <a href=\"http:\/\/delve.tv\/\">delve.tv<\/a><br \/>\n<\/strong>Adam Westbrook is part of an emerging group of professional video essayists and <a href=\"http:\/\/delve.tv\/\">delve.tv<\/a> is his version of a visual podcast. \u00a0Using the video essay form, Adam has developed a professional public intellectual ethos for himself through skillful overlay of explanation\/interpretation and concept. \u00a0Check out Westbrook&#8217;s work as a really good example of presenting and representing visual concepts crucial to an argument. \u00a0He&#8217;s a master at making an argument in the form of storytelling, and he uses the video essay as a vehicle for that enterprise.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/81047160\" width=\"676\" height=\"380\" frameborder=\"0\" title=\"Linklater \/\/ On Cinema &amp; Time\" webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/kogonada\/videos\">:: kogonada<\/a> (various venues)<br \/>\n<\/strong>If you found yourself\u00a0wondering what the auteur video essay might look like, :: kogonada is it. \u00a0I like to call this &#8220;expressionist&#8221; video essay style. \u00a0Kogonada is the ultimate minimalist when it comes to voiceover\/text over&#8211;its message impossibly and almost excessively\u00a0efficient. \u00a0Half of the videos in his library are simple,\u00a0expertly-executed <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Supercut\">supercuts<\/a>, highlighting\u00a0how heavily video essays rely on the &#8220;supercut&#8221; technique to make an argument. \u00a0Crafting an essay in this style really limits your audience and may not be a very good fit for the constraints of\u00a0assignment (very &#8220;cutting edge,&#8221; as we talked about it in class), but you will probably draw inspiration from ::kogonada&#8217;s distinct, recognizable style, as well as an idea of what a video essay can do at the outer limits of its form.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe width=\"676\" height=\"380\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0cryX-ZU1h0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>Lewis Bond,\u00a0<\/strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCL5kBJmBUVFLYBDiSiK1VDw\"><strong>Channel Criswell<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/a><\/em>Narrating in\u00a0brogue-y\u00a0Northern English, Bond takes his time, releasing a very carefully-edited, high-production video essay once every couple of months. \u00a0He&#8217;s a decent editor, but I feel his essays tend to run long, and I\u00a0feel\u00a0rushed by his narration at times. \u00a0Bond also makes a useful distinction between video essays and analysis\/reviews on his channel&#8211;and while most of his analysis\/reviews focus on film content (what you don&#8217;t want to imitate), his video essays stay pretty focused on film technique (what you do). \u00a0Hearing the same author consciously engage in two different modes of analysis might help you\u00a0better understand the distinction between the two, as well.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe width=\"676\" height=\"380\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/R26_F7pecqo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>Jack Nugent,\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCWTFGPpNQ0Ms6afXhaWDiRw\/\">Now You See It<br \/>\n<\/a><\/em><\/strong>Nugent&#8217;s brisk, formal analysis is both insightful and accessible&#8211;a good example of what it takes to secure a significant\u00a0following in the highly-competitive Youtube marketplace. \u00a0[That&#8217;s my way of slyly calling him commercial.] Nugent is\u00a0especially good at pairing his narration with his images. \u00a0Concentrate and reflect upon his simple pairings as you watch&#8211;how does Nugent help you process both sets of information at the pacing he sets?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe width=\"676\" height=\"380\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/d46Azg3Pm4c?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>Evan Puschak, <\/strong><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=d46Azg3Pm4c\">The Nerdwriter<\/a><\/strong><br \/>\nNerdwriter\u00a0<\/em>is a great example the diversity of topics\u00a0a\u00a0video essay can be used to\u00a0craft an argument about. \u00a0Every week, Puschak\u00a0publishes an episode on science, art, and culture. \u00a0Look at all the different things Puschak considers visual rhetoric and think about how he&#8217;s using the video essay form to make honed,\u00a0precisely-executed arguments about popular culture.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe width=\"676\" height=\"380\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/lte9pa3RtUk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis Hartwig and John P. Hess,\u00a0<\/strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/user\/FilmmakerIQcom\"><strong>FilmmakerIQ<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/a><\/em>Hartwig and Hess use video essays to explain filmmaking technique to aspiring filmmakers. \u00a0I&#8217;ve included the channel here as another example of what\u00a0<strong>not\u00a0<\/strong>to do in your argument, although perhaps some of the technical explanations that Hartwig and Hess have produced might help you as secondary sources. \u00a0Your target audience (someone familiar on basic film theory trying to better understand film form) is likely to find the highly technical, prescriptive arguments on FilmIQ boring or alienating. Don&#8217;t focus on\u00a0technical production in your essay (how the film accomplishes a particular visual technique using a camera); rather, focus on how the audience interprets the end result in the film itself; in other words, focus on choices the audience can notice and interpret&#8211;how is the audience interpreting the product of production? \u00a0How often is the audience thinking about\/noticing production in that process?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/128220350\" width=\"676\" height=\"373\" frameborder=\"0\" title=\"The Inception of Movie Editing: DW Griffith\" webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/144449308\">Kevin B. Lee<\/a> (various venues)<br \/>\n<\/strong>A good example of the older, high-brow generation of video essayists, Kevin&#8217;s collection of work hosted on his Vimeo channel offers slow, deliberate, lecture-inspired readings of film techniques and form. \u00a0Note the distinct stylistic difference between Kevin&#8217;s pacing and someone like Zhou or Lewis. \u00a0How does delivery affect\u00a0reception?<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"software\">Software Guides<\/h3>\n<p>How to access<a href=\"https:\/\/training.edb.utexas.edu\/node\/2329\"> Lynda tutorials<\/a> (these will change your life)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.dwrl.utexas.edu\/visualrhetoric\/2016\/03\/28\/importing-extern\u2026ta-into-premiere\/\">Handbrake and MakeMKV<\/a>\u00a0(file converters)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.dwrl.utexas.edu\/visualrhetoric\/user-guide-adobe-premiere\/\">Adobe Premiere<\/a>\u00a0(video editing)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.techsmith.com\/tutorial-camtasia-mac-prior.html\">Camtasia<\/a>\u00a0(screen capture)<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"files\">File management<\/h3>\n<p>Use your <strong>free <a href=\"https:\/\/www.utexas.edu\/its\/cloudstorage\/\">UTBox<\/a> account<\/strong> to upload and manage your files. \u00a0Make sure you&#8217;ve got some sort of system for tracking and assembling everything into your video editing software. \u00a0 UTBox has a 2 terabyte limit (much higher than Google Drive) and is an excellent file management resource for all sorts of academic work.<\/p>\n<p><em>Adobe Premiere saves versions with links to your video files, so it&#8217;s imperative that you keep your video files folder in the same place on every machine you open it up on.<\/em> \u00a0That&#8217;s why I keep all my video files in a big folder on box that I drop on the desktop of any machine I&#8217;m working on before I open my premiere files. \u00a0The Adobe Premiere <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.dwrl.utexas.edu\/visualrhetoric\/user-guide-adobe-premiere\/\">project walkthrough<\/a>\u00a0has more details on this.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"find\">Where to find video and how to capture it<\/h3>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/fairuse.stanford.edu\/overview\/fair-use\/four-factors\/\">About fair use<\/a><\/strong>.
