Authoring Authentically, Week 1

Dear [already] beloved class,

  • Did you know?  Favorite conversation starter!
  • Teacher, piffler, old soul, medievalist, learner.
  • [current] obsessions: languages, books, family & football.

After setting you to write your memoirs, I decided to give it a try.

Here are a few of my favorite of your memoirs (non-specific to your personal narrative).  It was hard to choose, and I hope you will share some of your other, perhaps more personal, memoirs in class Tuesday.

  • semisweet chocolate morsels, part of diet.
  • From best country on earth: TEXAS.
  • Opening books—easier than closing…mostly
  • Patient from experience; two older brothers.
  • WORLD’S YOUR OYSTER!!!!!!*      *pearls not included
  • Get ready… Get set… GO! (where?)
  • Started from the middle. Still here.
  • I’m from Vermont.  Yes, I ski.
  • She faded away, and we followed.
  • Separation just brings us closer together.
  • Buffalo Wings, Buffalo Bills, Buffalo Native
  • Why would you question free food?
  • Was this really meant for me?
  • I really just want to sleep.
  • Conformity. To be or… to be

Special thanks to Courtney for being our “trailblazer” and taking on our media accounts for the first week.  I hope you have enjoyed her thoughtful contributions to the “continuing” discussion outside of class. I particularly appreciated her desire to connect you all to events happening on campus, her witty and apropos article links, and her excellent blog post on curation on our Tumblr.  Please be sure, if you haven’t already, to check out our sites, before we have Courtney talk about her experience at the beginning of class Tuesday!

Courtney’s return to metaphor and analogy with the charge to tend our garden at the end of her post reminded me of the beginning of our journey together last Tuesday.  With our first writing assignment, “Writing is like…, Nick compared writing to gardening.  The rest of you added helpful metaphors reiterating the skills, process, time, practice, and patience necessary to excel at the craft.  Looking forward to seeing what your gardening and other analogous efforts will produce in the next few weeks!

Passing the (metaphoric) trowel to you, Rachel!

Ms. Barta
