Initial Learning Record

Your first critical piece of work for this course is your initial Learning Record reflection.

In this piece of work, you should write a formal paper of about 2-3 pages in length, which reflects on your own development as a reader, writer, speaker and listener (communicator in general), as well as your relation to the Course Strands and / or the Dimensions of Learning.

This piece establishes a baseline to which you can refer as you monitor your progress over the semester. It helps you to think about how you learn best and begin to build a plan for success. And it’s an opportunity for you to let me know about anything I can do to help you succeed.

Some questions you might like to consider as you write:

  • Where are you today as a communicator?
  • What are your particular strengths and weaknesses as a communicator?
  • How have you developed the other communication skills you currently have?
  • What milestones can you identify in your development?
  • Where do you currently stand with each of the Course Strands?
  • How have you developed the skills you currently have in each of the Course Strands?
  • Do you bring other skills to the classroom that you think will be valuable?
  • What’s your style in the classroom? Do you think out loud or prefer to ponder quietly? Do you like to be called on or prefer to volunteer? What helps you feel comfortable to participate in the classroom?
  • What do you want to get out of this semester?
  • What can I do to help you succeed with your goals?

Please consider these questions a jumping-off point, rather than feeling bound by them. You should feel free to add whatever material you think will be valuable, or to skip questions you don’t think add to your self-reflection.
