Out & About

Hey everybody! My name is Connor Masich and I had the enlightening experience to run the social media accounts for our class this week. I was excited about this project because this summer I worked in California at Vans as a social media and marketing intern. Looking back at the past posts for inspiration, I noticed how diverse the experiences of past curators have been. There were posts about anything from food to campus events, so I knew I needed to create some content that was fresh and creative in order to keep people interested.

As I mentioned, my summer internship at Vans really prepped me for this project. I was tasked with content creation for their social channels, so I had insight and opportunities to see what gets people engaged with media posts. This meant that I needed to be out and about at events and functions relevant to the brand, to create content that was no only appropriate and representative of the brand’s values but also appealing for consumers. This experience was priceless, and it has carried over to my personal social channels as well as into this project.
I wanted to create new content for our class pages, particularly Instagram, that was novel and interesting. I also wanted my posts to have opportunities for followers to be able to interact by including tips, links, and advice in my posts. This project allowed me to explore Austin, reaching the Greenbelt and the Capitol, and share my experiences with the class followers. The purposes of my posts were to remind followers that there is more to Austin than UT, and to encourage them to get out and explore this city!

College is the prime time for new experiences, so I hope to have influenced people to leave campus and experience their surroundings. My experience as curator was a blast, and I’m looking forward to the rest of this semester!

  1. Connor–
I really enjoyed all of your contributions to our media accounts. It was easy to hear your particular voice and individual interests in your posts, but I also learned more about Austin and UT through your eyes! Wonderful! For instance, I didn’t know that Sunday of your week was Museum day (and I kicked myself for not having our class twitter on notifications!), and I enjoyed your humorous and informative tweets about your frequent stays in the PCL and your relationship of your playlist title to these experiences.

I think Instagram is your most natural habitat, and I probably enjoyed your production there the most, but it’s hard to pick! I thought that your habit of taking stock of the history of this project showed in your posting.

    Nice work!

  2. Thanks for sharing Connor! It’s so awesome that you worked for Vans! I can’t imagine how much fun that could be! You truly proved how much you learned over the internship but also feel like you have a natural talent for these things! Nice job!
