Low Stress Week

After being flooded with exams the past two weeks, it was nice to have a less stressful work load the past few days, making it a good time to be the media curator. I felt that I had a lot of obligations that I had to fill in order to made the make the most out of the curator week. I have an Instagram and browse on it often, but I find myself not posting as frequently as the “typical” Instagram user.  When I have a picture in mind that I could possible post, I can never decide what to post and what caption to put, so I end up not posting at all! But I tried to be consistent and post at least once a day this week so I would not fall behind on the posts. On the other hand, I didn’t have a twitter account until I began this class since it was just one more social media outlet I would have needed to keep track of. (I’d rather pin things on Pinterest than tweet on Twitter). That being said, to be in charge of the twitter account was a more unique experience since I was pretty unfamiliar with it. Thankfully, we had a lot of work due in this class, so finding something to tweet was not too difficult!

This project prompted me to explore Austin a little more, which was just the push I needed since I hadn’t set aside time to explore the city yet. As a freshman I am new to Austin, and there are so many interesting things this city has to offer that I can’t wait to try. One activity I did was take a segway tour around Austin. It was really fun, especially with the nice weather we’ve been having. We went down 6th street and to the capital, giving me lots of opportunities for pictures. I am always sifting through my photo gallery while reminiscing over past memories. That’s when I found the picture of me at the USEF National Dressage Seat Medal Finals this August. I had to miss my first Friday classes of college, which I thought would be stressful, but thankfully syllabus week saved me, and I had little work to finish during the competition. That left me with plenty of time to focus on performing well.

Although I’m disappointed we are only allowed to post one picture of food, I’m glad I was at least able to share the picture I took of a blueberry muffin dessert soufflé at the restaurant Rise ◦1 in Dallas. I could not resist going back to one of my favorite restaurants, so I went there when I visited family and friends earlier this semester. It’s known for its delicious sweet and savory soufflés and its good bread. If you go to Dallas anytime soon, I highly recommend going there!

Freshman year is off to a good start, and I’m looking forward to the years ahead of being a longhorn. Hook ‘Em!

  1. I lol’ed at the fact that you said you were unhappy that you could only post one picture of food. I am the type of person that can’t start my meal until I’ve taken a photo of it. The picture also has to be the right angle and with flash so I can show how yummy it is LOL! But enjoy your freshman year! Explore! Do everything. I usually gets harder from here so just make you enjoy it. I remember I joined a dance group during my Freshman and Sophomore year and really enjoyed it. Plus ATX has so much food so you can try all the different foods. And it’s funny cause i missed my first day of school too because I was in Brazil. But that syllabus week really saved me too.

  2. I am glad you were able to be a curator during a week that is not too stressful! Those weeks are the best because they give you time to unwind and explore the city. The transition to college can be overwhelming and a big change but it sounds like you have it under control! I am also not very good at keeping up with social media, so being a curator may be a hard task for me. Also, the segway tour sounds like a lot of fun. I have always wanted to do one but have not found the time yet. I love being able to live in such a great city with so much to offer including the tons of great restaurants! The picture you posted of the dessert has convinced me to give Rise 1 a try.

  3. When I read your blog one thing really jumped out at me that I identified with: whenever I have a picture to post, it takes me way too long to decide on a good caption, and most of the time it takes too long that I decide to wait til the next day. It is stressful to think of what caption will be the most well-perceived. I am glad to know that I am not the only one who does this! I remember seeing your horse picture on Instagram and thinking it was cool, because I don’t really know anybody who competes in equestrian events. I think that’s really interesting and unique! Also, I am from the Dallas area and I have never heard of Rise 1, but it looked great in the picture! Enjoy the rest of your freshman year!

  4. I definitely agree with the deliberation on captions for Instagram. When I am able to find a clever caption, I am pretty proud of myself. Recently, putting a play on words with song lyrics seems to be the way to go. Puns always work too haha. The segway tour sounds very fun! I have been wanting to find free time but it just seems that every week there is something going on, or another test. I am also from Dallas and have not heard of Rise 1! It sounds very fancy; I will check it out the next time I go back.

  5. I also was very fascinated with Austin when I started college. I had only been here once before I came for School. As a junior, I have yet to do the long list of things I said I was going to do as a freshman. I’m glad someone in class was able to enjoy the great city of Austin. It’s rare for me to get a break from exams. That is only because my professors seem to purposely schedule their test right after each other, but that’s what happens in college.
I also really liked your Instagram post. I love Instagram and you’re blueberry muffin photo looked so delicious. I will definitely try that place when I visit Dallas!

  6. I find myself in the exact same situations on Instagram, losing interest in posting if I have to put too much work into it. Seems like it should be a pretty easy process but it ends up being a pretty high-pressure situation if you think about it for too long! I saw your posts of your competition on Instagram. Looks super cool, and congrats on the win! Also, the dessert looked absolutely insane, I’ll definitely check that place out next time I’m in Dallas.
