Austin’s Treasures

Going to The University of Texas is already a perk in in itself, but living in Austin makes it even better. There is so much to do, see, and enjoy in the live music capital of the world. Throughout this semester, and many others, I have had the opportunity to enjoy some of Austin’s treasures. I attended ACL, went skydiving, and enjoyed my favorite brunch spot, Josephine’s house.

Austin City Limits is one of my favorite weekends of the year. It is a music festival that is held in Austin each year for two weekends and includes over 100 different bands. The best part about it is being able to see your favorite artists in one place. This year I bought a 3-day pass with a few of my friends, and we spent every day running from stage to stage hoping to catch each artist we came for. We started out the weekend seeing Flume and Major Lazer. Major Lazer was one of my favorite shows because they performed in UT jerseys and brought Bevo on stage. On Saturday, we saw DJ Mustard, Schoolboy Q, and Kendrick Lamar, which were all amazing. By the final day, Sunday, I was exhausted, but still managed to see Haim and Mumford and Sons. Throughout the weekend, I used the ACL app to locate my friend and see the band schedule.  Overall, it was an unforgettable weekend spent in my favorite city with some of my favorite people

Another adventure I had the opportunity to go on this semester, was going skydiving. We drove to Skydive San Marcos, the closest skydiving location near Austin, and received a student discount of 50 dollars off. I went with a group of friends, who had all been before, so it was not as terrifying as the first time. However, I still was filled with fear as we watched the instructional video. Before boarding the plane, II captured a few snaps for my Snapchat story. In the plane, I was the last one to jump, so I was able to see all of my friends jump out. Once I was out of the plane, I could see the tall buildings in Austin and all the lakes and rivers. It was an awesome experience that I would recommend to anyone (even if you are afraid of heights).

My final adventure is my experience at my now new favorite brunch spot in Austin, Josephine’s house. It is a cozy, house located in the Clarksville area of Austin. My friend and I went on a Monday morning before class and sat outside on the patio. It was a beautiful day to enjoy an unfamiliar area of Austin. She ordered the migas, and I ordered eggs with bacon, toast, and avocado. We shared a bowl of fruit drizzled with honey, and pitcher of grapefruit juice. The breakfast was amazing, and the service was fantastic. We made friends with our waiter, who was from Spain, and talked to him about his experience in the United States. It was a great way to start a Monday, and both of us captured our time at the restaurant on Snapchat. A ton of our friends replied to our pictures with “WHERE IS THAT?” and “OMG THAT LOOKS AMAZING!” Needless to say, we will definitely be returning to Josephine’s house for brunch.

I was able to relive moments that I had completely forgot had taken place. However, after completing the assignment, I realized that my phone is not just a place to capture my favorite moments. It serves many other functions, including making it possible for me to get around this city. Without my phone, it would not have been possible to get around ACL or discover Josephine’s house. I also realized that it allows me to share new, exciting places that Austin has to offer with others through Instagram, Snapchat, and Facebook. I have found many restaurants, parks, and more through pictures that my friends have shared. Today, our phones give us the opportunity to connect to others and learn about adventures that are worth going on.
