My week as a media curator!

This week I was one of our media curators. To be completely honest, I over thought the entire thing. I didn’t know what to post, or if anyone would like what I’d post so for the most part I kept all my posts to a minimum. On my own personal Instagram account I follow all the norms, post at the right time, use a flattering filter, never like your own picture. But on our class account I felt more free to post what I actually wanted to post (we have 4 followers so it’s not like I would be judged) I posted one at 5:30 one morning and I felt liberated. I took pictures of whatever I wanted to and just posted to it without a second thought. It was a great feeling. Twitter however was a different story. On Twitter I am used to retweeting, commenting, and basically posting things that would only make sense in my own head. I found it was difficult for me to tweet on our account simply because I didn’t know how to. I didn’t know the brand/style or if I was allowed to tweet nonsense, retweet etc… I apologize for my Spotify playlist. I’m weird and basically the only style of music I listen to on a consistent basis is Broadway/ Disney. So I decided to share my love with you all.. You’re welcome.

This assignment was very interesting, I thought it would be easy, and maybe it was easy for some, but I overthink everything and that didn’t work well for me. My advice to future curators is to just be yourself because honestly trying to please your audience is extremely difficult and you will end up finishing this assignment last minute, you will also be stressed and maybe cry as well. Have fun!

  1. I agree with how liberating it felt! I was concerned about the style of my posts or what theme I wanted to portray but as time went on I realized that it doesn’t matter when I do what. Whatever I posted was because I wanted to and I didn’t care about whether or not someone would like it.

    • I totally agree with both of you. BTW I love the timing of your comment, you might like the date of mine. Anyways it is different when posting a picture for a crowd of people who follow you for a theme. Maybe you post cats, food, exercise or whatever else. When using the class instagram/twitter it feels like a part of your identity is stripped, because you lost the months/years of a theme that you had built.

I’m not to sure how much any of that actually made sense.

  2. I am yet to do my week as the media curator, but based on this post I think it should be an interesting week. I can’t wait to have the opportunity to post from a different alias. I’ve never used a ‘finstagram’ or any account thats not directly related to me, so this should be a fun oppurtunity

  3. Hi, Ebony,
Reading your post and Shannon’s back to back (as I’m just now getting around to commenting on this–backlog) reveals another trend in the experience of curators. The freedom / constraint / strangeness people feel when taking on a group account is a feeling I find useful, and it’s parallel, in some useful ways, to the writing process. Thanks for writing out your feelings and I’m super interested in the ways in which our group account made you feel more liberated on Instagram and less free on Twitter.

    Plus, your playlist was great!

  4. Ebony!
When It comes to Instagram I thought it was so cool that you felt liberated to post anything without a second thought, I can totally relate to that! Please don’t apologize for your Spotify playlist! I love love love that you love Disney and Broadway music! I loved that Ms. Barta played your playlist in class because it brought back so many memories!

  5. Hi Ebony,

Your Spotify playlist was awesome! I loved all of the Disney songs and really enjoyed listening to them in class. I actually went to Disney World over winter break and so it was fun to hear all of the different tunes.

  6. Hi Ebony,
I agree that sometimes it is easy to overthink about what to post. I can totally imagine the stress to not know what is allowed to be posted on twitter. However, I think social media is definitely somewhere where we can express ourselves creatively and we shouldn’t worry about being judged while using the class account. I loved your playlist! It was different and interesting to hear!
