Having always been a fan of the Longhorns football team, Austin was no stranger to me when I got to campus in Austin of 2015. Austin is widely regarded as one of the best places to live in the United States, and after 1 and a half years here, it’s no mystery why. During my time in Austin, I have had experiences unlike any other, and I want to share them with you.
The first place I think everyone who visits Austin should see is Lady Bird Lake. If you can catch this historic Austin waterway on a cool spring afternoon, there is no better place in the world to go on a walk. On any given day there will be hundreds of people walking the trail that connects the lake to Zilker Park. I have only been a couple of times, but each time I go Lady Bird Lake finds a new way to amaze me.
Like Lady Bird Lake, the view from Abel’s on the lake never ceases to take my breath away. Not only does Abel’s have great views, but they are known for their food and “Texas Teas.” The Texas Teas are a crazy mixture of coke, lemonade, and alcohol, and while I’ve never had one, I’ve heard nothing but good things. Abel’s on the lake is always a good time, and last time I was there I even saw Jordan Spieth drinking away his poor WGC performance.
Round up is a campus wide event put on by Texas’ Interfraternity Council. The event helps raise money for various charities, and this year Round Up raised over $27,000 from guest bands sold for the parties. The picture below is from Fiji’s annual low hoop tournament where Greeks, athletes, and even people from different schools compete in front of a crowd of hundreds. People from tons of different schools come to town to see round up, and this is my friend Lindy from TCU. Round Up is a super fun weekend that all students in Austin should see.
Even though this semester has been a lot of work, I have still had a great time. I cannot wait to continue my journey through Austin over the next two years. If anyone has any cool ideas for activities in Austin leave me a message in the comments!
Hey Jack! I have done maybe 2000 miles on Town Lake. The sad thing is that might be true. Anyways I do agree, it is a great place to walk or run on. I actually remember there being a lot of charmanders around when Pokemon Go was big.
I have not been to Abel’s but I might try it soon, I love trying out new food places.
I have only gotten to experience Round Up once. It was my freshman year. It was honestly a blast and I did not know raised over $27,000
