My Austin Experiences

This semester I have attended a couple of concerts, gone to the UT v. Notre Dame game, and eaten brunch brunch at a historic site in the Eastside of Austin. These experiences have allowed me to gain a different perception of Austin’s culture and enjoy some great events in the process.

The UT v. Notre Dame game was very exciting. There was a lot of anticipation built up around this game and there was speculation as to whether UT could compete with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, who were ranked 10th at the time. Additionally, this was the first game of the season and it was going to be played at home. Ticket prices were rising due to the high demand and the expected attendance was estimated to be over 100,000 people. The game lived up to the hype. After going into double over-time, the longhorns scored a touchdown to win the game 50-47. The atmosphere was great, an attendance record of 102,315 people was set that game. I had a great time at the game with my friends, it is one of the more memorable UT games that I have been to.

A couple of weeks ago I got to see Majid Jordan at Emo’s. I was looking forward to this concert because I find myself listening to their music often. Majid Jordan is an R&B duo from Canada, who is signed to Drake’s “OVO Sound” label. The two artists are Majid Al Maskati and Jordan Ullman. I think the duo has a unique R&B Electronic sound, which I enjoy; I included a couple of their songs in my spotify playlist. My favorite song from them is “Small Talk.” The concert was great and held at a nice venue. Additionally, I only paid $6 for my ticket! It wasn’t the biggest concert, but the group put on a great performance and I really enjoyed it.

Lastly, I ate brunch with my friend and his parents at Hillside Farmacy. Hillside Farmacy is known for its oysters, but has great brunch. The building used to be the Hillside Drugstore in the 1950’s. From the outside, the building doesn’t appear to be anything special, but the interior of the building looks really historic. Unfortunately, I didn’t take any pictures while I was there, but their Instagram account (@hillsidefarmacy) has some pretty good pictures of the food and location. The menu changes throughout the day, they have a breakfast, day/night, and weekend brunch menu. I ordered the smokey denmark bangers and eggs, which was really good! They are located at 1209 E 11th St, Austin, TX 78702.

During these experiences I relied very heavily on my phone. I took pictures at the game so I could send them to my Dad, who is a really big football fan. I recorded some of the performance at the concert and posted some videos on Snapchat. Before going to eat brunch at Hillside Farmacy, I looked up some reviews and recommendations for their best entrees. Although it may feel as if we do not rely on our cell phones, I think they may play a more important role in our daily experiences than we think. Our phones let us share our experiences with others, which makes them an extension of ourselves.
