Week 3 Media Curator

Hey guys, this week I was your media curator and I’d like to share my experiences of “curating media” with you. At first it was kind of overwhelming trying to keep track of how many posts I’ve submitted on Instagram and Twitter. Fortunately, I eventually got the hang of it by making it a habit to post at least 1 or 2 tweets and an Instagram photo post everyday. The real challenge was actually finding interesting content to post everyday when you are constantly barraged with homework and assignments and looming deadlines that I am sure everyone can relate to.

Creating a Spotify playlist was by far the most enjoyable aspect of this assignment. If I remember correctly, the last time I used Spotify was about 6 months back when my brother asked me to stream music on my iPhone. Getting back into Spotify was refreshing as I found new genres of songs that I enjoy like vaporwave and funk jazz. As such I proceeded to construct my playlist full of “dank tunes” that I found really funny and entertaining. The playlist contains the likes of various indie vaporwave music composers and I threw in the works of Earth, Wind and Fire just for the hell of it. I hope everyone enjoys that playlists or I will be very sad…

Getting on Instagram was tricky as I could not even log into the account for the first two days. I kept entering the same username and password provided to me for god knows how many times but I was greeted with the same annoying error message: “the username does not exist.” I later found out that my username was indeed incorrect because of one small mistake: the corect username was rhe.of.the.iphone instead of @rhe.of.the.iphone. Its funny how a single character can cause so much pain to me. Well it didn’t bother me that much as I got to post the most mundane stuff on Instagram like a banana I just bought at H-E-B today (Check it out!).

Hope you guys have as much fun being a media curator as I did!

  1. Hi, Shannon,
An aspect of this assignment I find curious is how students usually describe that it’s either hard 1) because they don’t know what to post 2) or because they are used to posting more on their social media and feel limited by the requirements. Your post has reminded me of this–thank you! I enjoyed your week, very much, and I found your contributions thoughtful and intentional!

  2. Shannon!
I totally agree with you, I thought it was overwhelming to keep up with the posts because I usually don’t like to post! But like you said, one gets the hang of it after a few tries. I loved the songs that Ms. Barta played from your Spotify playlist! September from Earth, Wind and Fire brings back memories!!

  3. Hi Shannon,

My week as media curator is approaching quickly so I am starting to begin to think about what I can post on each account. I am definitely having a more difficult time with thinking of what I could post so looking at your work as well as other curators posts are helping me brainstorm. I think I might set a reminder on my phone to alert me daily so that I can keep track of my posts and make sure I am staying on schedule especially with all of the other classwork. The Spotify playlist you created was great and I loved the selection of songs!

  4. Shannon,

I totally agree about how Spotify can show you new music. If it wasn’t for Spotify, I wouldn’t have found out that I really like Ethiopian jazz!
