New Experiences

Hi everyone! My name is Emily Allen and this week I took control of the social media sites and can honestly say I had a blast. When this project was first presented in class I was not completely sure if I would end up enjoying being charge of these media accounts because I didn’t have any experience using either one. Yes that’s right I don’t have a Twitter or an Instagram. Let the shock and complete bewilderment ensue. So this week when it was my turn to take the wheel I had to figure out how to use both Instagram and Twitter for the first time.
However, I wouldn’t change the experiences I have had this week because of this project for anything. Once I figured out how to work each site, which was thankfully not too difficult, I realized I have the perfect excuse to go out and explore some new places in Austin. I thought, who else can say that while exploring South Congress that they are getting homework done? Definitely none of the friends I brought with me.
So, to recap my week I was able to go out and find a new coffee shop, see the I love you so much wall, and watch the bats fly out from under the Congress Bridge for the first time! Along with all these amazing new experiences I also got to I enjoy sharing some of my favorite songs and videos with the class. Some of which I hadn’t had the opportunity to listen to or watch in a while. Overall my experience as the curator allowed me to go back and enjoy some of my favorite things and create some amazing new memories. Although I’m sad that my turn is coming to a close I am excited to pass the torch on to next weeks curators and I hope they have as much fun with the project as I had!

    • I am not sure if I would get either right now. Maybe this summer I might consider looking into making a profile on Instagram. Out of the two I think I would use Instagram more than I would use Twitter.

  1. What was your impression of Twitter and Instagram? I feel that my usage between my social media applications has changed significantly as I have gotten older. In my opinion, a major factor to consider is how old I was when the applications were first developed, and how they have grown through time. In high school and college, it is very apparent that everyone seems to bandwagon on the next “big” application. Here at UT, there is a variety of apps ranging from social media to services such as food and transportation.

    • After using both social media applications I think I like Instagram better because it is similar to Facebook which I have used since high school. I think the main reason that not everyone uses the same social media applications in college is because there are just so many people here. In high school, especially if you went to a small high school, if something became popular it didn’t have to spread to very many people before the entire school was using it. At a college like UT where there is a total of about 50,000 student I think it is harder for a trend to start and spread.

  2. Hi Emily–
Did you sign all of your tweets last week? I need to remember to ask everyone to sign their tweets, because occasionally an anonymous tweet goes through, and I wonder who is on the account. I’m thinking you did, because you seemed to consistently use your initials, but I’m just trying to figure out who is tweeting…

I’ll join the others in saying I think it’s doubly interesting to hear your experiences since you don’t have these account personally (I like W’s idea about the different reason social media apps are popular with different groups. Let’s come back to that with paper 3!).

Glad you were able to incite some level of jealousy with your friend group that adventuring = homework. This assignment is meant to be fun!

As a writerly followup, I would encourage you to paragraph a bit more intuitively in your blogging. Sometimes I think you were starting to make a transition in your mind, and we weren’t quite following up.

    Great content!

  3. First off, I think it’s totally rad how you haven’t conformed to societal norms and created different kinds of social media. May I ask why, though? Was it something you were just never interested in, or is there a specific reason why you never created and Instagram or Twitter? I remember how excited I was at first about having social media. Now, I’m honestly a little over it. Also, which platform do you prefer?

    • I think the main reason why I don’t use a lot of social media sites is that I just don’t have the time to use them. In high school I was a part of a lot of organizations and teams inside and outside of school. I was constantly participating in events and practices that I just got in the habit of going out and experiencing life rather than recording it. So when I got to college I was just used to being involved in a lot of things so I joined a few organizations. Now those organizations along with school take up a lot of my time so I don’t really have any room to stop and manage a social media account consistently. This is why in a previous rely I said I would consider getting Instagram but not until this summer when I have more time on my hands.

  4. I think its pretty cool how you do not have a twitter or instagram. I wish I could get out of the habit of using social media as well, since all it really does it consume most of my time and distract me. A word of advice is to stay away from social media no matter how unfavorable this suggestion is to others. In regards to how being a curator has helped you experience new things more, I hope you don’t just stop visiting popular areas in Austin just because the assignment is over for you. If you ever have time, you should try visiting the rope swinging sites along Lady Bird Lake.

  5. Hey Emily! I’m glad I got to read this post! Getting to know you in class has been a great pleasure and knowing that your curator week (which was technically school work) actually lead you towards fun and relaxing adventures! I enjoyed your week as a curator and I can honestly say that south congress is an AWESOME place to do homework! It’s cool that you got to see the bats too! I hope you continue to enjoy the city of Austin and that this December break you get to continue to listen and watch songs and videos that you really like!
