Ideograph-Practice

Check Canvas to see which Chiasmuses group you’ve been assigned to. Then in your groups of three:

  • Read over this piece that came out a few years ago in the Huffington Post. (Feel free to stop after the paragraph under the bolded subtitle “This is not about freedom of religion.”)
  • Identify some ideographs being worked in this argument and their ideological presuppositions. (If the ideograph is “rule of law,” for example, it taps into a presupposition that a society of laws, in which each person is treated equally under the law, is a very good thing.)
  • Identify any ideological paradoxes and how this rhetor attempts to resolve them. (How does this author, for example, indicate that her argument is not simply against “life” or “morality” or “freedom of religion”?)
  • Report back.
